Closet Capitalists
Posted on April 1st, 2009

On a rare occasion, there are those small events that comfort me and reassure me that even the most liberal among us will eventually be brought over to the capitalist system. Today was just such an occasion.
While minding my own business, humoring myself with the daily dalliances of the always creative and remarkably funny cast of characters over at the ultra-left Arkansas Times Blog… I saw a shocking (shocking I tell you) advertisement for OrderSmokesDirect.com
Order Smokes Direct was founded in 1998 on Sovereign Seneca Indian Territory, located in Western New York. Because they do not physically operate outside of Indian Territory, they do not have a taxable responsibility to any state. While federal tax on tobacco must be paid, this is not true for state taxes. The so-called “Jenkins Act” generally requires non-Indian tobacco retailers to file a report concerning interstate cigarette sales with each state’s tax administrator, it does not apply to Seneca Indian retailers who are licensed by the Seneca Nation of Indians. This is because the Act’s reporting requirements violate treaties between the Seneca Nation and the United States and also infringe upon the indigenous sovereignty of the Seneca People and that of the Seneca Nation of Indians. These treaties predate the “Jenkins Act” by more than 100 years. The company advertising on the Arkansas Times website does not file any type of “Jenkins Act” report or any other type of report with any state agency.
Therefore, in the finest capitalist fashion, the Arkansas Times has found a creative way to 1) undermine the competitiveness of their advertiser’s competitors, 2) provide access to a tax loophole, 3) defund the growing government bureaucracy, and 4) profit.
I, for one, salute our new capitalist ArkTimes overlords. I’m not worthy to behold such insidious genius.

April 1st, 2009 at 8:17 pmDidn’t Biden say that paying taxes was patriotic? And what about health care funding for Arkansans? Where will we get the money?
The Arkansas Times’ wanton and reckless capitalist ways must be stopped!

April 3rd, 2009 at 12:58 pmBrilliant, I say! Now, if only most smoking Arkansans would order from this website, we could show the big-government types that we’re not playing aroud. We never asked for a massive tax increase to fund a new government program!
Please, please, please don’t go anywhere, Rep. Martin. We need you in the Legislature.

April 6th, 2009 at 6:05 pmHey Mark when you awaken from your long dream of a free market state I can give you a long list of liberals who own their own VERY successful businesses.
For starters here’s a few:
George Soros
Warren Buffett (says his secretary pays higher tax rates)
Bill Gates ( prefers inheritance taxes remain unchanged)
Robert L. Johnson (3 major auto dealerships in Ark)
Mack McClarty (CoS-Pres Clinton, major auto dealer and hedge fund consultant)So sulk away boz. You will never match their wealth, business acumen or liberalism.

Rep. Martin isn’t saying that liberals can’t own a very successful business. He’s just pointing out the hypocrisy that comes along with it. They are socialists using capitalism to gain (*gasp*) success! Go figure.
